Truck Flips Over in Fairfax County On-Ramp Accident
On Wednesday, September 26th, a tractor-trailer was being driven down the western lanes of Interstate 495 when the driver attempted to leave the highway via the ramp to the northern lanes of Interstate 395. According to the Virginia State Police, it was close to 10:30 in the morning when the driver of the tractor-trailer began to pilot his vehicle along the ramp to north I-395 in Fairfax County.
The truck, a Volvo tractor trailer, was not described concretely in the initial report, and as it currently stands it is not known whether or not the vehicle was hauling anything or if it was empty at the time of the incident.
It was as the truck was navigating the turn of the on-ramp that the driver somehow lost control. According to the spokesperson for the Virginia State Police, the driver was not able to regain control of the vehicle in time and after swerving back and forth across the roadway the cab of the truck began to lose balance. In a matter of only a few moments, the truck flipped onto its side, causing severe damage to the vehicle itself as it slid along the asphalt, ultimately stopping in the middle of the roadway, making the ramp inaccessible to all other vehicles.
The driver of the truck was able to escape from the cab, a fact which was exceedingly important given that the crash had caused the truck’s fuel tank to rupture. As the fuel leaked across the roadway, a spark from the vehicle caused the truck to catch fire.
Fortunately, police, firefighters, and paramedics were on the scene at this point and were able to both attend to the injuries suffered by the truck’s driver, help redirect traffic from the area, and battle the fire before it grew out of hand. A HAZMAT team was also called into the area in order to fully clean up the oil spill.
It is not known if an investigation into the incident remains ongoing or not, and it is also not entirely clear just what happened to cause the driver to lose control of the truck.
