Three Car Crash in Centerville, Officer Hit

By MacDowell Law Group, P.C. on December 28, 2017

Last Thursday in Centerville, a large dump truck was driving down the southern lanes of Route 28, close to this road’s intersection with Interstate 66, when an incident occurred that resulted in the truck overturning. According to the initial report from the Fairfax County Police Department, the crash involved a car, a box truck, and the already mentioned dump truck. While the report failed to provide many specific details around the events of the accident, it seems that the ordeal began when the dump truck and the car collided in some way.

As a result of this collision and the following chaos, the dump truck overturned and fell directly onto the car. Somehow, numerous power poles were also toppled, sending live wires dancing around the street and cutting power from traffic signals in the area.

While the initial accident was being investigated, all traffic through the southbound lanes in this area was completely shut down. This created major traffic snarls for those trying to navigate the morning rush-hour commute.

Just around 7:00 in the morning, the entire roadway was reopened. Due to the high volume of traffic now returning to the area, several officers with the Fairfax County Police Department were stationed at strategic locations to help direct traffic and make the entire process more seamless. One of these officers, an individual who has not been named in any of the reports thus far issued, was in the process of directing traffic when they were struck by a passing car.

At the time of this writing, this car was not described and the driver of this vehicle was not named. It is believed that the individual behind the wheel of the car which struck the officer was apprehended, and, although the initial report failed to specifically indicate whether or not this individual tried to flee the scene or if they remained at the location of the accident on their own volition, it does not appear as though any criminal charges are being leveled at the person.

The drivers of all three cars involved in the earlier incident as well as the struck police officer were transported to nearby hospitals. It is believed that all injuries suffered were non life-threatening. Investigators are still attempting to uncover all the details relating to both crashes.
