Secret Service Hands Over Hit-and-Run Investigation to Arlington County Police

Police with the Arlington County Police Department have taken over the investigation into an incident that happened along Interstate 66, close to Rosslyn, and resulted in the injury of at least two individuals. According to the news reports on the incident, the Secret Service initially handled the ordeal, and it was not until after an accident took place that the investigation was handed over to the police within Arlington County itself.

It was around 4:30 on Sunday morning when a Secret Service officer who was on duty and in uniform first saw a person driving a car the wrong direction down I Street Northwest inside of Washington D.C. According to Jeffrey Adams, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, the Secret Service member began to follow the vehicle and initiate a traffic stop, but the person driving the car ignored the efforts of the Secret Service and continued to drive their vehicle the wrong way down the road.

The car, still traveling the wrong way, then left I Street Northwest and merged into the eastbound lanes of I-66. At this time, the driver was traveling west, and thus was continuing to drive in the wrong direction down the road.

Shortly after entering I-66, but after leaving Washington D.C. and entering Arlington County, the car being pursued by the Secret Service officer collided with an eastbound vehicle. The driver of car in question then leapt from the vehicle and ran away. A passenger inside of the car as well as the driver of the second vehicle were both injured. It is not clear if police with the Arlington Police Department arrived on the scene at this time, but we do know that the passenger inside of the car being chased by the Secret Service was taken into police custody after being transported to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the other car was also taken to a nearby hospital, it is believed with non life-threatening injuries.

The Arlington County Police Department is in charge of the investigation as it goes forward, and it is not believed that the Secret Service will play any more roles in this continuing saga.
