Pickup Truck Driver Hospitalized After Truck Rolls Down I-85 Embankment
Police in Petersburg are investigating an incident that resulted in the critical injury of a truck driver after a collision along Interstate 85, close to the 68th mile marker, which happened on Tuesday morning, April 24th. The incident, which took place in I-85’s northbound lanes, happened inside of the city of Petersburg and is being investigated by the Virginia State Police. The reports issued so far from this authority make clear just how little is known about the incident, but they do give us some essential material regarding the crash and its aftermath.
The crash was first called in to the police at close to 5:30 in the morning, although it is not clear when the crash itself happened. It is possible, for instance, that the incident took place some time previous but was not noticed until 5:30, when 9-1-1 was called and the first responders (including police and fire rescue crews) arrived at the scene.
When they reached the area of the reported crash, authorities found that a pickup truck had somehow departed from the interstate and toppled down an embankment close by. It was not clear if there were any other cars involved or if the pickup truck and its driver were the sole participants in the incident.
Due to the difficult area where the pickup had crashed, rescue teams found their efforts to free him incredibly hindered. According to one of the state troopers at the scene, it took somewhere around an hour to free the man enough so that paramedics could safely remove him from the vehicle.
Due to the violence of the crash, the driver of the truck was in critical condition. Virginia State Police shut down both directions of the interstate for an undisclosed swath of time while a helicopter known as the VCU LifeEvac was called into the area. The helicopter then landed on the now empty highway, and the pickup truck’s driver was loaded into its passenger area.
It is believed that the driver of the pickup truck is still receiving medical care at the hospital, although his precise condition was not included in the early reports.
