When you have a spinal cord injury, any chance of recovery seems slim to none. There are no significant treatments that can help you get your movement back once paralyzed, though there are therapies.
One good piece of information you may want to know about is a new report of scientists regenerating neurons in mice who have spinal cord injuries. While this is still far from being a cure for humans, it’s a step in the right direction toward regeneration of the damaged neurons of the spinal cord.
When there is a break in the body’s axon, it’s permanent. That axon, which makes up the spinal cord, can be damaged or severed beyond repair in a car crash or other serious incident. This study looked at ways to help regenerate those axons, despite the fact that the body does not do so naturally.
The scientists at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine Temple University showed that some functional recovery could be possible thanks to a tiny molecule identified only as Lin28. Lin28 regulates cell growth, and in the study, was able to be used as a therapy to help prompt regeneration of the spinal cord and the optic nerve in mice. The study discovered regeneration, including axon regrowth, in these mice after treatment.
The next goal is to find out how to get this molecule to injured tissues within human patients. It’s not a reality yet, but it looks like this could be a promising study to follow if you’re living with a spinal cord injury today.
In the meantime, if you’ve suffered an injury, remember that you can ask for fair compensation after you’re hurt. Treatments, especially new treatments, can be expensive, and you want to have the financial support you need.
