Fatal Crash on Fairfax County Parkway in Springfield

By MacDowell Law Group, P.C. on May 21, 2018

A collision in Fairfax County this past Thursday afternoon has resulted in the death of at least one individual. Initial reports from the Fairfax County Police indicate that the collision involved two vehicles. These reports also indicate that none of the other people involved were injured.

It was shortly after 12:30 in the afternoon that the first news of an incident in Springfield began to arrive at the Fairfax Police Department. It is not clear if the calls were placed by individuals who were involved in the collision or if they were placed by a witness to the collision. Police with the Fairfax Police Department arrived at the scene of the incident, believed to be in the southbound lanes of the Fairfax County Parkway, and began working with the paramedics and other first responders to free people from vehicles and assess the damage.

The official report tells us that the collision happened on the parkway, between Grambrill Road and Rolling Road, and that it involved two vehicles each carrying an unknown number of people. It is not clear if both cars were traveling in the southbound lanes of the parkway when the collision took place or if perhaps one of the cars had initially been traveling in the northbound lanes and then swerved into the southbound lanes to cause the crash.

Due to the scarcity of facts at this moment in time, it is impossible to say whether or not the collision was caused by a medical emergency, distracted driving (including a driver using their cell phone or texting), driving while intoxicated, or some other reason. The type of collision has similarly gone without description, and we do not know if it was a rear-end collision, a head-on collision, a T-bone crash, or some other type of impact.

The force of the crash did result in fatal injuries to one of the participants, and it is believed that this person was declared dead at the scene of the incident. Early reports stated that none of the other people involved suffered from any injuries, and it is not known whether or not any charges are pending.

The crash remains under investigation by the Fairfax Police Department.
