Fatal Car vs Pedestrian Collision in Arlington
A crash that happened in Arlington early on the morning of Monday, April 30th, and left one person dead is under investigation by police with the Arlington County Police Department. Preliminary reports suggest that only one car and one pedestrian were involved in the fatal incident which happened at the intersection of South Queen Street and Columbia Pike shortly after 7:00, just when the morning rush hour was reaching its peak.
We believe that the person struck was a man, although it is not clear if the police have yet been able to identify him or contact any relatives or next of kin in order to inform them of what happened. We also believe that the driver behind the wheel of the car remained at the scene of the incident and cooperated with the authorities during the first hours of the investigation.
Regarding the specific events of the crash, it was around 7:08 in the morning when the pedestrian left the sidewalk at the intersection of Columbia Pike and South Queen Street and began to cross the road. It is not known if there is a crosswalk at this particular intersection and, if there is, if the pedestrian had the right of way at the time when they decided to cross the street.
At the same time that the pedestrian left the sidewalk, a car—also not described in any way—came down the road. The report did not indicate if the car was on Columbia Pike or South Queen Street, and it also failed to mention whether or not the driver of this vehicle was obeying all posted traffic laws at the time of the incident. The report did not state if the driver of the car saw the pedestrian in the moments before the crash, but we do know that the vehicle and the man collided before the driver or the person on foot could change their course.
The southbound ramp to Interstate 395 was closed in the area, and police were on hand to direct traffic while the preliminary investigation was conducted. It is not known whether or not any charges are pending against the driver of the car that struck the man.
