Car Crashes into Inova Alexandria Hospital
Hospitals are where we go to recover from injuries sustained in things like car accidents. Usually, these are places far away from the actual source of the injury, and many of us see hospitals as locations where we are, for a moment, safe. For residents of Alexandria, this conception was challenged on August 11th when firefighters working within the city of Alexandria began receiving reports of a crash at the Inova Alexandria Hospital.
The reports which began surging into the emergency call center servicing the greater Alexandria area indicated that the collision involved at least one car and the hospital itself. Dispatchers immediately notified the Alexandria Fire Department’s IAFF Local 2141 union and soon there were medical teams at the area.
Pictures from the scene show a tan sedan poking out of a large brick wall. Half of the sedan is inside of the wall and half is resting on top of a pile of rubble. The reports from the scene itself suggest that there was only one person inside of the vehicle at the time of the crash and that this person was fully evaluated at the scene of the incident. The report did not indicate if the authorities found the driver of the car to be suffering from any injuries. It is also unclear as to just what happened to cause the collision in the first place, and authorities have not yet released any statements on the condition of the driver and any charges they may be facing.
The report failed to state whether or not any sobriety tests had been conducted at the scene or if the driver was evaluated in any way. As well as driving while under the influence of alcohol, it is possible that the driver suffered from a medical emergency when the crash took place. It is also possible that they swerved to avoid a collision between themselves and another car.
After the crash, which happened shortly before 4:00 in the afternoon, teams with the Alexandria Fire Department began to evaluate the condition of the building itself in order to discover whether or not it was believed to be structurally sound. No report yet exists on their findings.
