Car Crashes into Fairfax County Gas Pump
Late last July, a Fairfax County gas station was the site of a car accident that resulted in a raging fire that required multiple fire department crews battling the flames before being able to fully suppress them. According to a report from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, the incident began when a driver approached the gas station from the road and then collided with a fuel pump. It seems that the driver of the car (which has yet to be given a full description) was pulling up to the station in order to refuel when she accidentally drove into the pump.
In a statement, the unnamed driver told the authorities with Fairfax County that she believed that she was about to step on the brake when her foot landed on the accelerator pedal instead. Lurching forward, her car rammed the fuel pump and toppled it from its normally secure place on the ground. By the time the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue team arrived at the 8500 block of Richmond Highway, a fire was well underway. While it isn’t clear exactly how the fire began, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews described the scene when they arrived as being highly dangerous.
The report states that the fire began around 6:30 on a Sunday evening, and, although it refrains from saying at what time the fire was finally suppressed, it gave the estimated damage suffered by the station as being around $50,000.
The driver behind the wheel of the car that collided with the pump was transported to a nearby hospital. According to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, she was transported in order to undergo a full evaluation, although it was not immediately clear in the report whether or not she suffered from any injuries. It does seem clear, however, that by the time the fire crews arrived the woman was out of the car and well away from the center of the blaze. It is not known whether or not the authorities are considering testing the woman for any substance abuse in relation to the incident or whether they are treating the entire thing as an unfortunate accident.
