Car Abandoned after Crashing Through Fairfax County Yard
Several weeks ago, a resident of a home in the Fairfax County city of Herndon was alarmed early in the morning by a loud crashing sound coming from their backyard. According to the official report from the Herndon Police Department, when the homeowner cautiously got out of bed and went to investigate, they saw a strange scene of destruction and, at the center of it all, an empty Chevy Malibu.
It is believed that the incident took place around 2:00 in the morning, and the homeowner is presumed to have been asleep at the time. Awakened by the noise, they exited the house to find that the Chevy Malibu had plowed through a fence separating the home’s backyard from a residential street.
In addition to the destroyed fence, numerous things in the home’s private backyard were damaged or obliterated. The car reportedly ran over two trees before crashing into a small pond where it killed a few of the fish swimming there. The homeowner, saddened by the loss of their pets and frightened at how close the car came to colliding with the house, was able to estimate the damages at close to $6,000.
After crashing through the fence, running over the trees, and killing the fish, the driver exited the Malibu and, apparently not interested in taking responsibility for their actions, fled. The report indicated that by the time the homeowner climbed out of bed and left the house the driver of the car had already ran away.
Members of the Herndon Police Department are now working with other nearby law enforcement agencies to track down the individual responsible for the property damage. While no one was injured in this crash, the fact that a driver so completely lost control of their vehicle and then ran away from the scene of the incident means that the police will be launching a full criminal investigation. One of the primary concerns from the police is that the person who caused this incident is found in order to both offer financial compensation to the homeowner and undergo whatever instruction or punishment is necessary in order for them to never cause a crash like this again.
