Blow Out Causes Single Car Crash in Fairfax County

By MacDowell Law Group, P.C. on November 30, 2017

This past Monday, Fairfax County Police as well as members of the Fairfax County Fire Rescue responded to reports of a single-car accident that occurred close to the Huntington Metro Station in Alexandria. The official report, relayed to the public through Fairfax County Police spokesperson, says that the incident occurred just after 7:00 in the morning, close to the intersection of North Kings Highway and Timothy Place, as people in Alexandria were making their way to work.

A dark-colored sedan was driving down North Kings Highway when, for reasons that are currently under investigation, one of its tires suffered a blow out. In the moments after this occurred, the driver attempted to retain control of the vehicle, but their efforts were futile and the car careened across the road and off of the shoulder where it continued to travel until it collided with a utility pole placed near to the street.

Pictures from the incident show the vehicle halfway down a small embankment, sitting over what appears to be a set of concrete stairs. The front end of the vehicle is badly damaged, especially the passenger side where the hood and tire assembly are visibly peeled back. The impact was forceful enough to cause the utility pole to snap in half. The resulting power outages affected numerous homes in the neighborhood surrounding the crash site. Both lanes of North Kings Highway stayed closed from the time of the crash until nearly 5:00 in the evening while utility company employees worked to clean up the location as well as install a new pole.

The spokesperson for the Fairfax County Police told reporters that the driver of the car was not injured as a result of the incident. It was also reported that no passengers were in the vehicle and that no one in the area during the crash was affected (other than the customers who lost power as a result of the damaged pole). An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause or causes of the crash, and more details will be released to the general public as they become available.
