Arlington Woman Dies in Thanksgiving Day Crash
A second fatal crash occurred in Fairfax County on Thanksgiving morning. According to the report from the Fairfax County Police, Snyder, a 78-year-old Arlington resident was driving her 1989 Honda Civic eastbound on Interstate 66 when the accident occurred that resulted in her death. While the most current report still fails to provide us with all of the details, we do have enough to recreate many of the events as they happened.
Just before 10:30 in the morning, Snyder was driving her Civic eastbound on I-66, a little to the west of where the interstate passes the Nutley Street exit, when, for reasons that are currently a part of the investigation, she lost control of her vehicle. The car then departed from the roadway, crossed the right shoulder, and struck the Jersey wall with its passenger side.
The car then swerved back across the shoulder and returned to the eastbound lanes, either as a result of the forceful impact or because Snyder, alarmed and in shock over the sudden collision with the hard concrete wall, was attempting to regain control of the car. It was when she flew back onto the interstate that her car crashed into a 2006 Toyota Scion. The name of the Scion’s driver has not been released and it is not known whether or not they suffered from any injuries as a result of the crash.
Paramedics and other first responders arrived at the scene along Interstate 66 shortly after the collision occurred. Despite their efforts, there was nothing they were able to do for the injured woman. She was declared dead at the scene. The report indicated that Snyder was wearing her seatbelt during the entirety of the ordeal and that her injuries were therefore not the result of her failure to follow this particular safety protocol.
An investigation into this incident is ongoing as the police look to discover what happened inside of Snyder’s car just before it departed from the roadway and collided with the barrier wall. The authorities will release updates to this story as they emerge.
