63-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in Manassas Crash
On Tuesday, June 12th, a man from Manassas was driving his motorcycle down Liberia Avenue when he approached the intersection of Liberia Avenue and Ivy Glen Court. According to an official report from the Manassas City Police, the incident took place close to 4:45 in the afternoon and involved, as well as the aforementioned motorcyclist, an individual driving a car.
The motorcyclist was a 63-year-old Manassas resident, and the initial report was able to include his name. This means that the man was able to be identified after the crash, that his family was notified, and that they allowed his information to be released to the general public.
At the time of this writing, the precise circumstances that led to the incident are not clear. The police were notified shortly after the crash took place (around 4:45) and arrived only minutes later. The initial investigation conducted at the crash site took into account environmental evidence as well as the reports of various witnesses to the incident. These two factors combine to indicate that the driver of the motorcycle was headed straight down Liberia Avenue when a car traveling down Ivy Glen Court attempted to make a turn directly into the path of the motorcycle.
We do not know if the cyclist saw the car before the collision or if the car instead struck the motorcycle in a T-bone crash, meaning that the cyclist would not have had any time to react to the oncoming vehicle. We also do not know if the police are looking into whether or not excessive speed, or any substance abuse played a role in the incident.
Most importantly, early reports failed to state whether or not the intersection was governed by a light, a stop sign, or a yield sign. This is essential information as it could provide facts on which of the motorists had the right of way at the time when the collision took place.
As a result of the collision, the 63-year-old sustained serious injuries which he was unable to overcome even with the emergency medical care provided by responding paramedics.
An investigation into the crash is currently ongoing.
